After Party

Will awoke suddenly. He had been dreaming. In the dream he’d been sitting around the breakfast table with his family. But all of a sudden, they weren’t his family. One minute they were chatting happily, and then the next they were utterly still, each of them glassy eyed, with deep grooves running from the sides of their mouths to their chins. Will had tried to speak to them, to ask if they were okay, but found he couldn’t speak. Or move. Not even to blink.

He’d awoke because someone was hissing his name. His relief that the dream was over was replaced by unease as he realized his dad was leaning over him, a serious expression on his face.

“Come with me,” Kevin said.

Will stared blearily around his room. Sloppy was gone, and that realization filled him with inexplicable dread.

“Let’s go.”

Will followed Kevin down the stairs into his study.

“You want to explain this to me?”

Will gaped stupidly at the room. Even if he’d wanted to explain it, he doubt he could have found the words.

In the middle of Kevin’s desk was Sloppy, lying next to Marcy’s Suzie-Cries-A-Lot doll. The doll looked different in a way too subtle for Will’s sleep-addled brain to catch on to. There was nothing subtle about the bottle of pills, the jar of lube, and the large purple dildo, though. They were intrinsically unsubtle.

“Is this your idea of a joke?” said Kevin. “I mean, I know you’ve got a blind spot when it comes to humor, but—”

“No, Dad, this wasn’t me!”

“Oh, what, your sister did this?”

“Maybe, I don’t know!”

“Don’t lie to me, and keep your voice down. I don’t want your mother—”

“What the shit is this?” Charlene was standing in the study doorway, her face smeared with night cream. “Oh, dear God, did you cut a hole in Suzie-Cries-A-Lot’s butt?”

Will looked at the doll again. That was what he’d noticed. The rag doll’s skirt had been hitched up, and a trail of stuffing poofed out from a hole in her behind.

Will felt sick.

“That is your sister’s doll, and she’ll be—IS THAT MY VIBRATOR?”

“I honestly don’t know!” cried Will. “I didn’t even know you had a vibrator! I barely know what a vibrator is!”

“And do you have any idea how much those pills cost?” said Kevin, exasperated. He frowned. “And…hey, have you been on my computer?”

“No! I was asleep, I swear!”

Charlene gathered up her vibrator, the blue pills, and the lube, stuffing them into her robe pockets.

“You shouldn’t be touching this stuff! Oh Christ, do I have to explain to you why you shouldn’t be touching this stuff? Did they not teach you that in school yet?”

“Why the heck were you on my computer? You have your own tablet. Did you look in any of my…personal…files?”

“I swear, I just came down right now with you!”

“Why is Suzie-Cries-A-Lot sitting on that dummy’s lap?”

Marcy had appeared in the doorway, rubbing sleepily at her eyes.

Charlene and Kevin turned to Will, their expressions each simultaneously demanding and dreading an explanation. Will felt his heart sink.
